Carnelian and its counterpart Sard are varieties of chalcedony which are silica minerals which have been colored by inclusions of iron oxide. It is most commonly found in Brazil, Indonesia, India, Siberia and Germany.

The name is derived from the Latin word cornum, a cherry whose translucent fruit looks like the stone but more importantly, the Latin words for flesh.

Carnelian was used widely during Roman times to make engraved gems or for wax seals. One of the exhibits at the British Museum is a Neo-Assyrian seal made of carnelian which depicts Ishtar-Gula as a star goddess. 

Carnelian was worn by ancient Egyptians who believed the stone assisted them on their soul journey in the afterlife.  Here on earth, they believed Carnelian calmed feelings of jealousy and anger.
